Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
We install and service Gelco chimney caps across Atlanta, and in most cases we can match your existing cap to a replacement on the first visit. A full Gelco cap installation in Atlanta typically runs $340 to $680 installed, depending on flue size, roof access, and whether the chase cover or mounting hardware needs replacing at the same time. Most owners discover their cap has failed the hard way: they hear rain drumming down the flue during an Atlanta thunderstorm, find rust flakes on the firebox floor, or spot a squirrel vanishing into the chimney. Ruben Castellano and our crew keep Gelco-compatible caps and hardware on the truck because this is one of the most common callouts we get from older homes in neighborhoods like Grant Park and East Atlanta, where original caps have been out in Georgia humidity for decades.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco builds their cap line around a few core mounting styles, and the trick is knowing which one your chimney actually has before ordering anything. The most common application in Atlanta is the Gelco single-flue cap with a standard tension-band mount, which slides over the outside of a terra cotta flue tile and locks down with a steel band. You’ll also see slip-in models that press into the inside diameter of the flue, and leg-mount caps anchored to the crown. The quickest way to identify what you have is to check the underside of the cap for a stamped model number, or measure the flue tile itself: outside dimensions for band-mount, inside dimensions for slip-in. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question, we’re direct about it: Gelco makes a solid cap, and if yours lasted 12 to 15 years in Atlanta weather, an OEM replacement is worth the small premium. Where we do recommend a quality aftermarket equivalent is when the flue dimensions are non-standard and you need a heavier-gauge stainless or a taller draft-shaping profile than the original Gelco offered. We won’t guess on any of this; we measure before we quote.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. The most common failure is actually the mounting band. The cap itself can be sound while the band has loosened or the flue tile has spalled beneath it, letting water track down the outside of the flue. We see this constantly on older Atlanta chimneys where freeze-thaw cycles have done a number on the clay tile.
- Rust staining on the cap body or screen. Even stainless caps develop rust at the weld points, especially where the mesh meets the hood. Once surface rust breaks through the passivation layer, Atlanta’s humidity keeps it working. This doesn’t always mean immediate failure, but it means the clock is running.
- Birds or squirrels inside the chimney. If the screen mesh has torn or pulled away from the hood, animals find it fast. In Atlanta squirrel pressure is relentless, and a torn Gelco screen is an open invitation. You’ll hear scrambling before you’ll see any damage.
- Debris piling up in the firebox. Failed mesh or a shifted cap lets leaves, twigs, and roof grit into the flue. This is also a fire hazard, not just a nuisance: dry leaf litter sitting in the smoke shelf above a hot flue is fuel waiting for an ember.
- Smoke backing into the room. A cap that’s rusted through or clogged at the screen can choke the draft. If you’ve started noticing a smoky smell in the room during fires, the cap is the first thing we check.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Atlanta, expect a Gelco-compatible cap installation to land between $340 and $680 all-in, with most standard single-flue jobs settling around $420. What drives the range: roof pitch and accessibility (a steep roof adds labor in a way a walkable ranch roof doesn’t), flue tile condition (if the tile is cracked at the top, the band mount won’t seat right and you’re looking at a crown touch-up first), and whether the chase cover or screws are too far gone to reuse. You’ll get a written price before any work begins, never a verbal estimate that moves on you later. The cap itself carries the manufacturer’s warranty, and our labor is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if our installation fails within a year, we return and make it right at no charge. That’s in writing, every time.
DIY or Call Us?
There are honest reasons to check before you call, and honest reasons to stay off the roof. What you can safely do from the ground or with a ladder set against the gutter line: look for visible rust, a tilted cap, or torn mesh. A pair of binoculars does the trick. What you shouldn’t try: pulling a stuck cap off a flue tile that may already be cracked, working a tension band loose with one hand while bracing on the crown, or doing anything on a roof after rain when Atlanta moss gets slick. The real risk isn’t the cap; it’s the ladder and the roof transition. If your gut says you’d rather have a pro look at it, call (762) 356-6423. We’ll send a background-checked, identity-verified technician with a name and photo sent to you before they arrive. Tell us what you’re seeing, and we’ll tell you what it actually means.
FAQs
In Atlanta’s climate, a Gelco cap typically lasts 12 to 18 years before the screen, welds, or mounting hardware show enough wear to justify replacement. Southern humidity and frequent thunderstorms shorten the lifespan compared to drier climates. If your cap is older than 15 years, we usually suggest budgeting for replacement within the next season or two.
Sometimes. If the screen mesh is torn but the hood and mounting band are solid, a mesh replacement is a viable repair that buys you several more years. If the band is rusted through, the welds are failing in multiple places, or the flue tile beneath has spalled, replacement is the more honest fix. We’ll show you the condition with photos before we quote anything. Call (762) 356-6423 and we’ll walk you through what we find, in plain language, before any dollar figure leaves our mouth.
Most Gelco cap installations in Atlanta take 45 to 90 minutes once we’re on site, including flushing the roof access and verifying the new hardware is seated right. If the crown needs patching first, add another hour. You don’t need to be home for the installation itself, though we recommend being there for the initial inspection so we can show you exactly what we’re seeing.
We keep the most common Gelco-compatible cap sizes on the truck, including standard single-flue bands for 8×8 through 13×13 flue tiles. If your chimney needs a non-standard size or a custom profile, we order it directly from the manufacturer and install it as soon as it arrives. We’re an independent service provider, not a Gelco dealer, which means we’re free to match the right part to your actual chimney rather than pushing whatever we happen to stock. Alongside Gelco, we also carry professional trade brands like DuraFlex and HeatShield, so if the cap installation turns up a deeper flue issue, we can often address it in the same visit.
If your Gelco cap is failing or you’re not sure, call Alcott Chimney Atlanta at (762) 356-6423. A live person answers, you’ll get a written price before any work starts, and the technician at your door will have a name, a face, and a photo ID you saw before they ever pulled into the driveway. We’ve been doing this since 2002, and we’d rather show you than tell you.
