Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
We install DuraFlex chimney caps in Atlanta every week, and a typical replacement runs $380 – $620 installed, including the cap, custom fitting to your existing liner, and a written one-year guarantee on the work. Most Atlanta homeowners discover their chimney cap has failed one of two ways: water staining on the ceiling near the flue, or the sound of something moving around in the chimney that shouldn’t be there. If you’re seeing either, the fix is straightforward and usually done the same day we’re out.
What we see most often in Atlanta is a cap that’s rusted through at the base where it meets the DuraFlex liner, or one where the screen has pulled loose and a squirrel or starling got past it. DuraFlex makes a solid cap, but Atlanta’s wet springs and hot, humid summers are honest work on galvanized steel. Eventually, the mesh fails.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex chimney caps fit the DuraFlex stainless steel liner systems we install and service: the DL (light-wall) and DH (heavy-wall) flex liners, plus their Pro and ProConnect configurations for wood, gas, and pellet appliances. The cap seats onto the liner’s top plate, not the masonry, which means the fit is specific to your liner’s inside diameter. If you don’t know your liner size, pull the part number off the small metal tag attached to the liner inside the chimney. If the tag is gone, we measure the flue opening during the visit.
One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: DuraFlex caps come in half-inch increments, and a cap that’s even a quarter-inch off will sit loose and whistle in a strong wind. We keep DuraFlex caps on the truck in 5.5″, 6″, 6.5″, 7″, and 8″ diameters. Aftermarket caps can work as a budget option, but we stock DuraFlex OEM parts for this job because the mating profile at the cap base is machined to match the liner’s top collar. It seals tighter, and the stainless mesh holds up longer than the zinc-coated mesh found on price-point generics. Alcott Chimney Atlanta is an independent service provider and not affiliated with DuraFlex, but we install their caps because they’re what we’d put on our own houses.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water stains on the ceiling or wall near the chimney. This means the cap’s base seal has failed and rain is getting past the liner collar. In Atlanta, we see this after spring storms, especially on the north-facing sides of homes.
- Animal sounds in the flue. Squirrels, starlings, and raccoons find a torn mesh screen fast. We’ve pulled whole bird nests out of uncapped or half-capped chimneys in Grant Park and East Atlanta.
- Rust streaks running down the cap or flashing. That’s the cap’s finish breaking down, usually from years of Atlanta humidity cycling against the metal. Once the coating goes, the rust-through is not far behind.
- A visible gap or tilt when you look at the cap from the yard. Wind or a poorly fitted installation may have shifted it. A tilted cap allows rain to pool against the liner, which accelerates corrosion.
- Smoke backing into the room on windy days. The cap’s baffle or screen may be blocked with creosote, or the cap itself is undersized and choking your draft.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Atlanta, an installed DuraFlex chimney cap runs $380 – $620. The parts themselves run $120 – $260 depending on diameter and material grade, and the rest is the labor to safely access the chimney, remove the old cap, inspect the top plate, and seat the new one properly. If your liner’s top plate is also rusted, that adds another $140 – $220, and we’ll show you a photo of it before anything gets replaced.
Every cap installation includes a written price before work begins, the removal and disposal of the old cap, a camera check of the liner’s top section, and our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the cap fails within a year of our installation, we come back and fix it free. No truck fee, no diagnostic fee, no fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
Let’s be plain: this is roof work. A chimney cap sits at the highest point of your roofline, and Atlanta rooflines are steep in the older neighborhoods. We recommend you don’t do this one yourself. The job requires you to be on a ladder or working from the roof surface, often on a 6/12 pitch or steeper, while handling a metal part and a cordless drill. That’s how people get hurt.
What you can do safely from the ground: look at the cap with binoculars and tell us if it’s tilted, rusted, or missing mesh. Take a photo and send it over. We’ll look at it before we arrive so we can bring the right part and give you a straight answer. If you’d rather not be on a ladder at all, that’s exactly why we’re here. Call us at (762) 356-6423 and we’ll handle it.
FAQs
A DuraFlex stainless steel cap typically lasts 12 – 18 years in Atlanta’s climate, but the mesh screen often fails first, sometimes in as little as 8 years. The heat, humidity, and seasonal storms are harder on caps here than in drier regions. If your cap is past ten years old and showing rust streaks, replacement is the smarter move than patching. Call (762) 356-6423 and we’ll give you an honest read.
Rarely. We can replace just the mesh screen if the cap base is still solid, which runs $90 – $140 and buys you a few years. But if the base is rusted or the mounting collar is deformed, a repair is throwing good money after bad. We’ll show you the cap up close and tell you plainly whether repair or replacement makes more sense for your money. Estimates are free.
Most DuraFlex chimney cap installations take 45 – 90 minutes on a single-story home. Two-story or steep-pitch roofs add time for safe access and staging. We don’t charge by the hour, so you’ll know the full price before we start.
Yes. Our Atlanta trucks carry DuraFlex caps in 5.5″, 6″, 6.5″, 7″, and 8″ diameters, plus top plates and the matching stainless hardware. We also stock cap components from HeatShield and Gelco for mixed-brand liner systems. If your cap needs a size we don’t carry, we can usually have it in hand within a day or two.
Ruben Castellano taught himself to look at a chimney the way a homeowner looks at it, not just the way a technician does. When you call, you’re getting the same person who’s been up and down Atlanta rooftops for the better part of a decade. Tell me what you’re seeing, and I’ll tell you what it actually means. Then you’ll get a number before any work happens.
