Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Crown Repair: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
A Copperfield crown repair in Atlanta typically runs $450 to $1,100 installed, depending on whether we’re rebuilding the crown from scratch or repairing a smaller section. We stock Copperfield-compatible crown materials on our trucks, so most repairs are finished the same day we arrive. You usually discover the problem the way most Atlanta homeowners do: after a rainstorm, you notice a damp spot on the ceiling near the chimney, or you spot hairline cracks in the concrete surface when you’re up on the roof cleaning gutters.
The crown is the concrete cap that sits on top of your chimney, sealing the gap between the flue tile and the brick. When it fails, water gets behind the brick and into your attic. Atlanta’s freeze-thaw cycles and summer humidity make crown damage more common here than in drier climates, because moisture seeps into tiny cracks, expands, and splits them wider over a few seasons.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield manufactures chimney caps and crown systems that fit most standard masonry chimneys, but the crown itself is not model-specific the way a gas fireplace part is. What matters is the flue tile dimension and the outside footprint of your chimney. We measure both before we quote, because a crown that doesn’t overhang the brick by at least two inches on every side will fail early. That overhang is what sheds water away from the brick below.
If your Copperfield setup includes one of their multi-flue caps or a custom chase cover, we match the crown profile to that hardware so the cap seats properly when we’re done. Copperfield uses a stainless steel and concrete composite on their newer crown systems, which holds up better than plain mortar crowns, but the older Copperfield crowns we see around Atlanta were poured concrete with no expansion joint. That’s the version that fails first. We carry both Copperfield OEM crown materials and a quality aftermarket equivalent from Olympia Chimney. The aftermarket costs about 15 percent less and performs the same when installed correctly, but if your chimney is under any kind of Copperfield warranty, we use OEM so the warranty stays intact.
One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Copperfield’s current crown system is designed for flue tiles that sit no more than one inch proud of the crown surface. If your flue tile extends higher, which we see on older Atlanta bungalows in neighborhoods like East Atlanta and Kirkwood, the crown needs a raised profile cut. That adds about $75 to $125 to the job.

Signs Your Copperfield Crown Repair Is Failing
- Hairline cracks in the concrete surface. These start small but widen every winter when trapped moisture freezes. Once a crack is wide enough to catch a fingernail, water is getting through.
- Spalling brick near the top of the chimney. When the crown leaks, water runs down the inside of the brick face and pushes the outer layer off. You’ll see brick chips on the roof or in the gutter below the chimney.
- Water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace. This is the late-stage sign. By the time water reaches interior drywall, the crown has been failing for at least one full rainy season, sometimes longer.
- Efflorescence, which is the white chalky residue on the brick. That residue is salt being drawn out of the masonry by moisture. It means water is moving through the chimney structure, and the crown is usually the entry point.
- A cap that wobbles or sits off-level. The Copperfield cap bolts to the crown surface. If the crown is crumbling around those anchor points, the cap loosens, and you may hear it rattle during heavy Atlanta storms.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Atlanta, you should expect to pay $450 to $700 for a partial crown repair where we patch and reseal the existing surface, and $800 to $1,100 for a full tear-out and repour with a proper expansion joint and drip edge. The range depends on chimney size, roof pitch, and whether the flue tile needs repositioning. Two-story chimneys add about $150 to $250 because of the ladder and safety rigging involved.
Every quote includes the material, labor, haul-away of the old crown debris, and a written guarantee for 365 days. If the repair fails within that year, the second visit is free. You also get a written price before any work starts, so there’s no surprise charge for the flange repair we discovered while we were up there. That’s the Threshold Standard, and it applies to every Copperfield crown repair we do across Atlanta, including Buckhead, Decatur, and Marietta.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect the crown from the ground with binoculars, or from a ladder if you’re comfortable on one and the roof pitch is walkable. Look for visible cracks, missing sections, or a cap that’s shifted. What you shouldn’t do is climb onto a steep roof with a bucket of crown coat and try to patch it yourself. Crown repair involves working at the highest point of the home, often on a sloped surface, carrying mixed concrete. A slip up there is a long fall, and the product you’d buy at a hardware store doesn’t have the flexibility to survive Atlanta’s temperature swings anyway.
If you see cracks, that’s enough information. The repair itself is our job. Call (762) 356-6423 and tell us what you’re seeing, and we’ll tell you what it actually means. That’s usually Ruben on the phone, and he’ll tell you straight whether you need a repair now or whether it can wait another season.
FAQs
A properly installed crown with an expansion joint and a two-inch overhang will last 20 to 30 years in Atlanta, provided the flue cap stays seated and you keep tree debris off the crown surface. The main reason crowns fail early in this city is missing expansion joints in older pours, which is exactly what we correct when we rebuild.
You can, if the cracks are hairline and the concrete is still solid underneath. We use a flexible elastomeric crown coat that bridges small cracks and sheds water for several more years. But once the crown is crumbling or separated from the flue tile, a patch won’t hold, and replacement is the honest answer. Call (762) 356-6423 and we’ll tell you which situation you have after a free inspection.
Most Copperfield crown repairs in Atlanta are finished in four to six hours. That includes removing the old material, setting the forms, pouring, and a curing period before we reset the cap. If we’re doing a partial repair with crown coat, it’s closer to two hours.
We carry Copperfield-compatible crown forms, expansion joint material, and stainless steel anchor hardware on our trucks. We also stock DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco parts for other repair needs. That means we can usually complete the job on the first visit without ordering parts and rescheduling.
If your crown is cracked or you’re seeing signs of water intrusion, call (762) 356-6423 for a free inspection and written estimate. We’ll show you exactly what we found, with photos, before you spend a dollar.
