Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
We stock, match, and install Famco chimney cap installation components with most calls completed within one business week of your first phone call to (762) 356-6423. Installed pricing for a Famco-compatible cap in the Atlanta metro typically runs $215 to $460, including the cap itself, fasteners, sealant, and full labor. Most homeowners discover this part has failed the same way: a rain stain appears on the ceiling near the fireplace, or they spot rust flakes around the top of the chimney while checking gutters. In Atlanta, our humidity and storm cycles mean a cap that stopped sealing correctly shows itself fast.
Your cap isn’t decorative. It stops rain, birds, and downdrafting air from getting into the flue, and its mesh keeps embers from leaving it. When it fails, you get water in the firebox, animal noise in the flue, and a draft that pushes smoke back into the living room. Ruben Castellano has walked thousands of Atlanta homeowners through exactly what he found on their cap before quoting a single dollar figure, and that’s how we’ll handle yours too.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco produces several cap lines that turn up regularly on Atlanta homes, and the installation details differ enough that guessing causes leaks. The most common on our service calls are the FC series (standard single-flue caps), the FCA series (extended-height models for taller terminations), and the LFC or “universal” line that fits multiple flue shapes. You’ll find the model stamped on the underside of the cap skirt or on the original packaging if it’s still in the garage. If the stamp is gone, we measure the flue’s outside dimensions and match the cap by size, not by guesswork.
The compatibility gotcha we see often in Atlanta’s older housing stock: the flue liner sticks out of the chimney crown an inch or two, and the homeowner has bought a cap that slips directly onto the tile but doesn’t account for that lip or for a terra cotta crown that’s not perfectly flat. A Famco cap installed on an uneven crown will wobble, and wobbling fasteners back out within a season. We carry the correct mounting hardware, Flex-Dam adjustable bases where needed, and the weather bands that make up the difference. If an aftermarket equivalent fits your flue and lasts as long, we’ll say so; for odd flue shapes and taller profiles, we recommend staying with genuine Famco so the fit isn’t a compromise.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the fireplace. The cap has shifted or the seal around its base has failed, letting rain run down the flue instead of away from it. In Atlanta’s summer downpours, even a small gap matters.
- Rust streaks coming from the cap or the collar where it meets the flue. Galvanized caps eventually wear through at the seams, and stainless lasts longer but can still pit near the brackets on older installs. Once rust shows through, replacement beats trying to patch.
- Birds, squirrels, or nesting material inside the flue. The mesh section has a tear or the cap lifted off one side. The mesh is the first thing to fail on most Famco models in the field.
- A smokey smell in the room while a fire burns. A damaged cap can’t manage the draft correctly, and when Atlanta pressure systems change, backdrafting gets worse. If you’re seeing this plus water staining, the cap isn’t doing either of its jobs.
- You can see daylight where the cap should meet the flue. This happens when the screws holding the cap loosen and the unit cantilevers to one side. A tilted cap is an open channel for water and animals.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Installed Famco-compatible cap replacement in Atlanta runs $215 to $460. The range depends on flue size, whether the chimney crown needs a repair collar, and whether you’re replacing a standard galvanized cap or upgrading to stainless mesh and lid. You’ll get a written price before any work starts, not a verbal range that drifts after the ladder goes up.
Here’s the breakdown we show every customer:
- Cap and hardware: $80 to $220 depending on model and material
- Labor and ladder work: $100 to $180, including the second story if needed
- Fastener replacement and reseating: Included in every job
- Written guarantee on the repair: Included, and if the cap fails within the guarantee period, the second visit is free
We don’t quote a low cap price and then add a “roof access fee” or surprise you with a sealant charge on the invoice. The price you approve before we start is the price on your receipt.
DIY or Call Us?
If your cap looks visibly tilted or a screw has backed out, you can inspect it from the ground with binoculars and get a decent sense of what you’re looking at. That’s a safe, useful first step. What we don’t recommend is taking a drill and a new cap up onto a roof without a fall harness, a proper ladder setup, and someone footing the ladder for you. Every year we get calls from homeowners who got most of the way through a cap swap, discovered the crown was cracked or the flue was an odd size, and now have a half-installed fixture left exposed to Atlanta weather. Working at chimney height is not the same as replacing a fixture at eye level, and the fall risk is real. If there’s a repair collar or uneven crown involved, call us at (762) 356-6423 and we’ll have it done before the next storm arrives.
FAQs
A galvanized Famco cap in Atlanta typically lasts 8 to 12 years before seam rust or mesh tears appear, and a stainless model usually runs 12 to 20 years, depending on tree coverage and how often the cap gets soaked and dried in our humidity swings. If you’re within those windows and seeing rust or shifting, replacement makes more sense than repair. Call (762) 356-6423 for an exact assessment of your cap’s remaining life.
Small tears in the mesh can sometimes be patched, and a loosened screw can be retightened, but once the welds at the collar or the seams of the lid begin separating, patching won’t hold in Atlanta’s wind and rain. We’ll tell you plainly if your cap has another season in it or not, and you’ll see what we’re seeing before you make the decision.
Most Famco cap replacements take 45 minutes to an hour once we’re at the home, and that includes removing the old hardware, checking the crown, installing the new cap, and testing the draft. If we find a cracked crown or damaged flue, we’ll show you camera evidence and quote any additional work separately, and you’ll never be pushed to decide that same day.
We carry the most common Famco cap sizes and mounting kits on the truck, and we can source less common sizes within a few days. We also stock professional trade brands like DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco, which means we can match a cap to your existing liner and crown instead of making a universal fit work where it shouldn’t. Call (762) 356-6423 with your flue measurements and we’ll confirm what we can have ready before we arrive.
