Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Flue Liner Replacement: The Atlanta Owner’s Guide
A Gelco flue liner replacement in Atlanta typically runs $1,400 to $3,200 installed, depending on the liner diameter, height of your chimney, and whether we’re reconnecting an existing appliance or starting fresh. We stock Gelco-compatible stainless steel liner kits on our trucks for the most common Atlanta chimney configurations, which means most replacements are done in a single visit.
Most Atlanta homeowners discover they need a Gelco liner replacement the hard way: during an annual inspection when our camera shows the liner has buckled, separated at a seam, or corroded through. Sometimes it shows up as a small pile of flaky metal at the base of the firebox, or a sudden backdraft that fills the living room with smoke. The liner is the only thing separating combustion gases from the wood framing of your house, so when it goes, the fix isn’t optional.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco made liner kits for both masonry and factory-built chimney applications, and the part you need depends on what’s already in your flue. Most Atlanta homes we service have either the Gelco 300-series smooth-wall flexible liner or the earlier 200-series with a corrugated profile. They’re not interchangeable. The 300-series has a different pitch on the lock seam, so a 200-series coupler will not seat correctly on a 300-series liner, even if both measure 6 inches across.
The quickest way to identify what you have is to look at the liner where it enters the chimney crown. Gelco stamped the series number on the liner body every 18 to 24 inches, though years of Atlanta humidity often make the stamp hard to read. If you can’t find it, we can identify the series from interior photos in most cases. We also keep quality aftermarket equivalents for both series on the truck, which matter because Gelco’s parent company shifted production lines years back, and OEM stock for the 200-series specifically is now inconsistent. For the 300-series, we generally recommend staying with Gelco spec because that lock seam design is more forgiving in Georgia’s freeze-thaw cycles in older Atlanta masonry chimneys.

Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
- Flakes of metal in the firebox or at the cleanout door. This is usually galvanic corrosion eating through the liner from the inside out, accelerated in Atlanta by our summer humidity sitting in the flue between burns.
- Smoke backdrafting into the room. When the liner splits or separates at a seam, the chimney loses draft pressure. Instead of pulling smoke up, it pushes it back into the living space.
- A sulfur or “rotten match” smell near the fireplace, even when cold. That’s flue gas residue condensing inside a liner that’s no longer sealing, and it’s more pronounced in Atlanta’s damp months.
- Visible buckling or rippling when you shine a light up the flue. Liners warp from a chimney fire or years of overfiring, and once the metal is deformed, it will not straighten out.
- Your chimney sweep’s camera shows pinholes or a darkened “burn-through” spot. We flag this during routine sweeps in older intown Atlanta homes frequently, especially in chimneys that had a liner installed in the 1990s or early 2000s without a proper insulation wrap.

Every Alcott chimney job in Atlanta includes the removal of the old liner, a full flue inspection by camera before the new liner goes in, installation of the Gelco-compatible liner with a proper top plate and cap connection, and a smoke test when we’re done. You get a written price before any work starts, so there’s no line item surprise at the end. And every Gelco liner replacement carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the liner fails within a year, the second visit is free, and the repair is covered in writing. That’s not a verbal promise. That’s a document you keep.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely check a few things yourself: look for visible gaps or rust at the chimney crown, photograph the liner from the firebox with your phone’s flash, and check the cleanout door at the base of the chimney for metal flakes or soot buildup. What you shouldn’t do is attempt to pull and re-feed a liner on your own. A flue liner is under real compression when it’s locked in place, and the risk of dropping a section down a 25-foot Atlanta chimney, damaging the masonry, or getting a liner kinked mid-pull is high. A kinked liner can’t be unkinked, and we’ve replaced a few DIY attempts where the homeowner ended up buying the liner twice.
If you’re not sure whether your Gelco liner is failing or just dirty, call us at (762) 356-6423. We’ll send a technician who’s been background-checked and identity-verified through the Threshold Standard, and you’ll see their name and photo before we arrive. Tell me what you’re seeing, and I’ll tell you what it actually means.
FAQs
A properly installed Gelco stainless steel liner typically lasts 15 to 25 years in Atlanta, though our humid summers and the creosote buildup common to wood-burning fireplaces here can shorten that to 10 to 15 years without regular sweeping. The two biggest enemies of liner life in this climate are moisture trapped between the liner and masonry, and acidic creosote sitting against the steel between burns.
In most cases, no. Small pinholes can sometimes be addressed with a repair sleeve, but once a Gelco liner separates at a seam or buckles from heat, there’s no safe patch. The liner is one continuous air path, and any unresolved breach is a carbon monoxide risk. If our camera shows a section that’s intact except for one small area, we’ll tell you and quote the sleeve. If it shows structural failure, we’ll tell you that too, and show you the footage.
Most single-story Atlanta homes with straightforward chimney access are done in three to five hours. A two-story home with a steep roof pitch or a chimney surrounded by scaffolding needs may run a full day. We’ll give you a realistic window when we quote the job, not an optimistic one.
We keep Gelco-compatible liner kits for the most common diameters on our trucks, along with aftermarket equivalents where Gelco OEM stock is no longer reliable. For unusual sizes or older series, we order the specific liner and schedule the install within the week. If you want certainty before we arrive, call (762) 356-6423 and we’ll confirm the exact part we’re bringing to your Atlanta home.
If your Gelco flue liner is showing signs of wear or you just want a straight answer about what’s going on inside your chimney, call Alcott Chimney Atlanta at (762) 356-6423 for a free estimate.
